Fake News

Fake News

Fake News

On December 4, 2016, 28-year-old Edgar Maddison Welch drove a couple hundred miles to a Washington DC pizza restaurant with an assault rifle and demanded to see the hidden underground tunnels where the children were being kept for a child sex ring with ties to Hillary Clinton and ritual Satanism. He fired three shots during the course of his attempt to “self-investigate,” but thankfully nobody was injured. The well-intentioned man had become enraged after familiarizing himself with a conspiracy theory perpetuated in numerous YouTube videos which all seemed to tell a similar story about the pizza restaurant, Comet Ping Pong.

The videos claimed that words like “pizza” and “cheese” were undeniable code words for a pedophile’s preferred kind of child. When the owners of the pizza joint wanted to hold a Clinton Campaign fundraiser, and asked Clinton Campaign Chair John Podesta to prepare some of the food as a special feature for the event, Podesta’s response – revealed in leaked e-mails – was irrefutably incriminating evidence that he liked young boys: “I’ll do a pasta.”

Pizzagate was an example of “fake news” having unintended consequences. Fake news was a relatively new phenomenon that increasingly emerged during the 2016 Presidential Campaign. After the incident at Comet Ping Pong, Michael Flynn Jr., son of Trump’s disgraced National Security Advisor, tweeted his continued belief in the legitimacy of the conspiracy theory:

week-0008-170226-021

Fake news originated from numerous sources during the 2016 Campaign. Some, like the “pizzagate” story, began on alt-right chat rooms and took on a life of their own as different people added to them with YouTube videos laying out their own theories or new clear connections that they were finding to unrelated facts and information. Some fake news stories came from sketchy entrepreneurs in America and abroad who saw that outrageous news about Hillary and Trump was an easy guarantee of web clicks that they could use to sell advertising and make a buck. Some fake news was created and distributed for partisan purposes. And some appears to have been generated and spread with the blessing of the Kremlin in hopes of keeping Hillary Clinton from gaining the Presidency. Many of these stories got traction through social media – particularly Facebook and Twitter, as the incendiary but false headlines generated titillation and outrage and were shared widely.

For whatever one may think of Donald Trump, he is an absolute master at powerful branding – at bluntly redefining things and making those definitions stick through constant repetition. And he has now done that by redefining the term “fake news” and co-opting it for his own use.

Many have long since forgotten what “fake news” meant a whopping four months ago. Now the term is used to constantly call into question the legitimacy of any news story – from reputable journalists – in which undesirable information about the President is brought to the surface. The new definition successfully shifts attention away from blatant fabrications that had successfully helped Trump win the election, and redirects attention to cultivate an overblown degree of skepticism toward the mainstream news media.

Questioning the information we are getting right now is legitimate. The mainstream press see the wellbeing of the nation in general and the sanctity of the First Amendment in particular – their bread and butter – to be under threat, and many are accordingly a bit concerned. They are operating in a crazy-making new landscape in which different supposedly credible representatives of the Trump Administration give them conflicting information, the President is openly hostile toward the press and changes his firmly stated positions on issues sometimes in the course of a week, and rumors and hysteria are flying throughout the government and the nation in general. In such an atmosphere – combined with the already existing 24-hour news cycle where it is important to be first with a story – getting the story right is not always easy, but I believe that journalists are generally doing their best, and are not intentionally trying to present anything “fake.”

What is dangerous about the term “fake news” is the inherent subtext that comes with it: do not trust facts, do not trust your own eyes and ears, do not trust traditional news sources. The only source of information upon whom you can confidently and consistently rely is the President himself.

Demonization of the news media has been used successfully in the past by other authoritarian leaders to help achieve their ends: Pol Pot, Mao Tse Tung, Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein, Bashar al-Assad, Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Vladimir Putin, Benito Mussolini, and Adolf Hitler. The latter branded the media the “lügenpresse,” or “lying press.”

“We must challenge this statement and this sentiment that the news media is the enemy of the American people. This sentiment may be the greatest threat to democracy in my lifetime.”

William H. McRaven
Retired Four-Star Admiral/former Navy SEAL who organized and oversaw the operation that killed Osama bin Laden
Washington Post – 2/24/17

Is the press “the enemy of the American people,” as President Trump asserted last week? Absolutely not. At a time like this, it is essential that we support the news outlets that we consider the most credible and accurate, so that they can continue steadfastly doing their work that is so vital to our democracy, without the threat of being hamstrung or worse by a President who does not always like what the facts reveal about him.

Alternative Facts from an Alternative Universe

Self-selecting our news sources, a reluctance to hear opposing ideas, and the choice by many of us to surround ourselves only with like-minded individuals has resulted in many Americans becoming oblivious to the beliefs of those with whom they disagree. This bubble helped create the world of “alternative facts” in which Donald Trump could become President.

To counter this, each week I will present a little of what Trump’s supporters are thinking. Their reality may be very different from yours. Please listen/read to the end, and consider what respectful questions you could ask to better understand and have a conversation, rather than seeking to prove them wrong as quickly as possible and shut them down. We can’t change minds if we can’t talk to each other.

On Impeachment

On Impeachment

On Impeachment

2/18/17

Each day, many of us watch slack-jawed as we witness further evidence of President Trump’s potential corruption, ties to Russia, mental instability, administrative chaos, lack of knowledge of political basics, divisiveness, and extremism. Many of us consider at least some of these things to be cause for impeachment, and we wonder why the wheels are not being put in motion for a removal from office. There are a number of explanations.

First, and most obviously, Congress needs to initiate and follow through on any impeachment proceedings, and both houses are currently controlled by Republicans. Those Republican Congresspeople are, by and large, getting exactly what they want right now – and more: Trump is doing all of the most extreme and unpopular things that they have wanted to do for years, and is taking all of the public heat for it. All that the Congressional Republicans have to do is keep their mouths shut, look the other way and whistle a happy tune. What could be better?

Second, many Congressional Republicans are the kind of politicians that Trump voters couldn’t stand: politically cowardly, insincere, ready to change positions whenever they believe that doing so is politically expedient. They see a lot of unrest in the streets and at their town halls right now. But they also know that Trump voters were silent before they elected Trump, and are quite possibly being silent right now. Politically, that is a very smart observation, and is an important thing for people on the left to be aware of as well: despite the impression that the left’s echo chamber might create for itself, the lack of vocal support for Trump right now does not mean that that support may not still be widespread. Congressional Republicans do not want to outrage this “silent majority” (realistically a minority), because Trump’s people are much more likely to vote Republican in future elections than are the masses who are swarming out into the streets.

Third, like many other Americans, Congressional Republicans watched the Presidential debates, where Trump effectively used aggressive, simplistic, elementary-schoolyard-style branding to inescapably trample each of his opponents – Republican and Democrat. They know that opposing him could be politically disastrous. They also know that the time will eventually come when they have no choice but to do so.

Right now is the honeymoon period for Congressional Republicans. Trump has behaved more like a king than a President. As the former top decision-maker for his own companies, that is how he is used to operating all his life. His main Presidential actions have been to sign his own executive orders. There has not yet been much of the usual back-and-forth that takes place between a President and the Legislature. That kind of interaction will eventually come, but for now, Congress is happy to have the President do what he wants and let him experience all of the flack for it.

Fourth, Congressional Republicans have made the political calculation that the impeachable things that Trump can be proven in a court of law to have done thus far do not yet rise to the level of public outrage that would prompt them to impeach. Realistically, all that is provable is that Trump has conflicts between his Presidential duties and his financial interests – bad, but not bad enough. Arguments about his mental instability could result in impeachment under the 25th Amendment, but such mental instability is difficult to prove in court. His divisiveness and extremism are part of what appealed to his most enthusiastic base, and that base is generally pleased with what they have seen from him so far. His lack of knowledge of politics is something that could be fully expected from a political “outsider,” so there is little surprising there beyond perhaps his seeming willful determination to flaunt that lack of knowledge internationally, offending America’s traditional allies and adversaries alike. Similarly, his Administration’s inner chaos and incompetence could be expected from a Washington novice, and he has dismissed reports of disorganization as “fake news” from the “lying press” – a characterization that his supporters likely believe.

That leaves us with his ties to Russia. Despite the seething anger of Congressional Democrats after a confidential briefing several weeks ago from FBI Director James Comey, I am of the belief that Comey’s FBI and other intelligence agencies are in the process of diligently investigating these Russian connections, and that any silence from the FBI and others is out of a desire not to jeopardize those investigations by tipping off the Administration about what leads they are pursuing. I also believe that the law enforcement and intelligence communities are investigating Trump’s business interests as they relate to corruption of his position as an elected public official.

Until one of these two investigations is complete, we are unlikely to see any serious moves toward impeachment. However, I do believe that at that point, there will be ample and irrefutable evidence, it will be made public, and Congress will have no choice but to take action.

In practical terms, such action will be far from undesirable for Congress: they will have in Mike Pence a mentally stable, cooperative President with whom they are ideologically in perfect step; all of the really ugly, controversial measures will already have been put in place by Trump; and people on the left will be jumping for joy at their “victory” and breathing a sigh of relief that there is no longer a lunatic in the White House with one finger on the nuclear button and one finger on his Twitter account.

And that’s the way that I believe the American Constitutional system will ultimately force/empower a dysfunctional political system to remove a profoundly unfit leader from office in the year 2017. If we can get there without a nuclear war, major financial collapse, or the irreversible implementation of an authoritarian state along the way, I’ll be happy. Yeah, I’m setting the bar pretty low.

Sunday, February 12, 2017

This will be the last installment of “The Week in Trump” as a summary of each week’s Trump news. My apologies. I have taken the responsibility of posting this summary seriously, and am finding it overwhelming to locate and determine the most accurate information on each given story, amid a regular flow of “alternative facts” from the Trump Administration, countered with at times exaggerations, mischaracterizations, and flat out inaccuracies from even the most reputable news media.

I will continue to post links to important articles and editorials here on the home page as I find them, and will continue to regularly update the lists of nationwide protests, events, resources and organizations. Thank you for reading, and thank you for resisting.

The four stories that I consider most important to continue following are the actions of Steve Bannon, indications of Trump’s mental health, Trump’s many conflicts of interest, and the connections/communications between Russia and the Trump Administration/the 2016 Trump Campaign.

Articles and Editorials:

The major pieces of Trump news this week were:

  • General Flynn’s Contact With Russia
  • Immigration Update
  • Conflict of Interest: Nordstrom
  • Jeff Sessions Confirmation Hearing
  • Internal White House Dynamics

Main Stories

Flynn and Russia

Another questionable Russia connection has surfaced in the Trump Administration. In December 2016 – after the election but before the Inauguration– Trump’s National Security Adviser, retired General Michael Flynn, communicated with Sergey Kislyak, a Russian Ambassador to the US.

Of concern is the substance of the conversation.

At the time, it was widely anticipated that then-President Obama would soon retaliate in some way – likely with sanctions – for Russia’s actions in our election. For Flynn and Kislyak to have discussed sanctions (and the possibility of lifting them) while Obama was the President is not only inappropriate, but potentially illegal. (Full Article – NPR)

Flynn initially denied to reporters that he had discussed the topic of sanctions (Full Article – Politico). He later stated that he might have discussed sanctions, that he wasn’t sure. The Washington Post and New York Times claim to have information from “current and former American officials” that Flynn did in fact discuss the easing of sanctions with the Russian Ambassador while Obama was President (Full Article – New York Times).

The relationships of Flynn and others in the Administration to Russia are coming under increased scrutiny as the timeline of their past actions are found to line up with information in a dossier compiled by a former British intelligence officer (Full Article – Business Insider).

Immigration Update

Last Sunday, 97 major companies filed suit over President Trump’s executive order on immigration, asserting that immigrants are important to the success of their businesses (Full Article – The Independent UK).

This followed a suit on Friday (2/3) by the Attorneys General of Washington State and Minnesota, in which a federal judge had placed a temporary nationwide hold on the executive order (Full Article – CNN). Trump referred to that judge as a “so-called judge,” but his judgment was unanimously upheld this Friday (2/10) by a three-judge federal appeals court. Further, when a representative of the Trump Administration told the three judges that they had no authority to review the executive order, the judges stated that “there is no precedent to support this claimed unreviewability, which runs contrary to the fundamental structure of our democracy” (Full Article – NPR). Trump vowed to continue fighting for his executive order, then later suggested that he might just “file a brand new order.” (Full Article – Bloomberg).

Conflict of Interest-Nordstrom

After Nordstrom stopped carrying Trump’s daughter Ivanka’s clothing line, the President criticized the retailer Wednesday on Twitter for “unfair” treatment of her (Full Article – Daily News). On Thursday, Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway went on Fox and encouraged Americans to buy Ivanka’s products, a move that prompted the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee,  Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) to respond “that is absolutely wrong, wrong, wrong.” (Full Article – NPR). Some Democrats also believe that the President’s tweet demonstrates a conflict between the President’s financial interests and his responsibilities as an elected public official.

Elizabeth Warren at Sessions Confirmation: “Nevertheless, She Persisted”

On Tuesday, during Senator Jeff Sessions’ (R-AL) confirmation hearing, Senator  Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) read a 1986 letter that Coretta Scott King (wife of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) had written in 1986 when Sessions went before the Senate for confirmation as a US District Judge. At that time, allegations of racism against Sessions ultimately prevented him from being confirmed.

But as Warren read the letter, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and the majority in the Senate voted to silence her (Full Article – New York Times). McConnell later said that “She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted” – the last three words quickly becoming a rallying cry for women on social media (Full Article – The Atlantic). Later, several male Senators – Tom Udall (D-NM), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) – each read some or all of the letter to the Senate uninterrupted (Full Article – CNN). On Wednesday, the majority of the Senate confirmed Sessions as US Attorney General (Full Article – NPR).

Internal White House Dynamics

The White House inner circle have begun to rethink their strategy after significant resistance to their current approach. More upsetting to Trump than the pushback on immigration, however,  was the fact that he hadn’t realized that one of the executive orders that he had signed included an appointment of his advisor Steve Bannon to the National Security Council (Full Article – New York Times). If the stories coming from concerned White House staffers are true, there are worrisome indications of an erratic President who is having trouble adjusting to his new responsibilities and to the basic processes and functions of government. In one such story, Trump called his National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn, at 3am to ask him if it was a strong dollar or a weak one that is good for America’s economy. Flynn suggested that Trump contact someone with a background in economics (Full Article – Huffington Post).

Main Stories

Immigration Executive Order, “Bowling Green Massacre”

Over a week ago, toward the end of the day on a Friday, Donald Trump signed an executive order delaying entry to the US for individuals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The abrupt move caused chaos and heartache for many as relatives were turned away at airports nationwide, and large protests erupted spontaneously at several airports. Trump blamed the confusion on a computer error (Full Article – ABC News). When acting Attorney General Sally Yates, an Obama appointee, refused to enforce the ban, President Trump fired her (Full Article – MSNBC). Amid the confusion – even among airport security and customs – the New York Times and Politifact did their best to sort through what the executive order does and does not say (Full Article – New York Times) (Full Article – Politifact), and over 5 million people around the world signed a letter of protest to Donald Trump.

On Thursday, Trump Advisor Kellyanne Conway justified the executive order by offering up an “alternative fact” in an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews when she referred to the “Bowling Green Massacre,” a terrorist attack that never took place (Full Article – The Guardian). Conway instantly became the subject of ridicule on social media. This is the story to which Conway was inaccurately referring (Full Article – Heavy.com) (Full Article – Snopes.com).

On Friday, after appeals from the Attorneys General of Washington State and Minnesota, Federal Judge James Robart put a nationwide temporary hold on the executive order (Full Article – CNN).

 Separation of Church and State

On Thursday, President Trump spoke at the annual National Prayer Breakfast. His speech was short on spirituality and long on schtick, including a suggestion to pray for Arnold Schwartzenegger to get better ratings as his successor on “The Apprentice” (Full Transcript – Time Magazine) (Full Video – C-SPAN).

The address also included some substance, such as proposing a rollback of the “Johnson Amendment,” which has required that churches and other religious institutions cannot retain their tax exempt status if they advocate for a political candidate from the pulpit (Full Article – New York Times).

In related news, Huffington Post acquired a draft executive order (i.e., not proposed or signed) on religious freedom. The order would prevent the government from forcing individuals or organizations to “violate their conscience,” a measure that could easily lead to institutional discrimination and a setback for LGBTQ rights (Full Article – Huffington Post).

America’s Place in the World

The President’s abrasive, blunt, confrontational approach to international relations may be sowing the seeds of global alienation for the United States.

Last week, Trump’s immigration executive order prompted over 1.8 million Brits to sign a petition asking that Trump not be invited to any official State Visits to England because “it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen” (Full Article – NPR – Note: the article says 1.3 million, but the petition actually has over 1.8 million signatures as of February 4).

On Wednesday, Trump spoke by phone with Mexican President Enrique Peña Niéto. Many news media reported that Trump threatened to invade the country (Full Article – Politicus USA). However, Trump stated later that his suggestion to send troops into Mexico to deal with their “bad hombres” was “lighthearted,” and Eduardo Sanchez, Mexican Presidential Spokesperson, stated that “It is absolutely false that the president of the United States threatened to send troops to Mexico” (Full Article – USA Today).

Trump also had a Wednesday phone call with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Trump described the call as his “worst so far” (Full Article – BBC), and it was widely reported that he hung up on the Prime Minister (Full Article – Salon). However, the Australian Prime Minister, asked directly about it, stated that the “call ended courteously” (Full Article – BBC). Turnbull will be interviewed on CBS’s “60 Minutes” tonight (Full Article – news.com.au).

Also on Wednesday, in response to a ballistic missile test by Iran, the President tweeted (God, did I just write that phrase?!) that Iran was being “PUT ON NOTICE” (his emphasis) (Full Article – CNBC), asserting questionably that Iran had violated the nuclear deal (Full Article – NPR). Iran dismissed the threat as coming from “an inexperienced person” (Full Article – Washington Post). Trump later imposed minor sanctions against Iran, after which Iran carried out more missile tests (Full Article – Bloomberg).

Deregulating the Banks – Again

In the wake of the 2008 financial collapse, after billions of American taxpayer dollars had been extracted to bail out the big banks for their reckless and unethical behavior, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Act to prevent future financial calamity (Full Article – USA Today). Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders asserted throughout his campaign that Dodd-Frank did not go far enough.

On Friday, President Trump passed an executive order to set the wheels in motion to dismantle Dodd-Frank (Full Article – Bloomberg) (Full Article – Forbes), believing that the big banks are currently overly restricted. Depending on how the process continues, the move could free up the banks to behave less responsibly to increase their profits, potentially leading to another financial collapse.  The (possibly) good news is that part of Trump’s plan appears to include no bailout from taxpayers.

Trump’s First Counterterrorism Raid Went Horribly Wrong

President Trump ordered his first counterterrorism raid last week. Navy SEAL Team 6 was sent on a mission to attack an al-Qaeda stronghold in Yemen, but al-Qaeda forces seemed to be aware of their arrival in advance, possibly tipped off by loud, low-flying drones. One American officer, William Owens, was killed, as were numerous Yemeni women and children, and a $75 million American military aircraft had to be destroyed to prevent it from getting into terrorist hands (Full Article – New York Times). Asked about the mission, President Trump asserted that it was a success.

Other Stories That You Should Know About

False Story: Supreme Court Nominee Led Group “Fascism Forever”

This week, confirmation hearings began for Trump’s Supreme Court Justice pick, Neil Gorsuch (Full Article – New York Times). Many Democrats want to delay or deny confirmation in retaliation for Republicans’ refusal to confirm Obama’s centrist Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, presented in March 2016 – nearly a year before the end of Obama’s term as President.

On Thursday, tabloid “Daily Mail” published a false story  that in high school, Gorsuch had led a group called “Fascism Forever” (Full Article – Daily Mail), a rumor which rapidly spread on social media. The story stemmed from a comment that Gorsuch made in his high school yearbook as “a tongue-in-cheek attempt to poke fun at liberal peers who teased him about his fierce conservatism.” (Full Article – Snopes)
